Welcome to the Uncle Ikes site
Uncle Ikes is a youth group sponsored by the Izaak Walton League of America-Des Moines chapter. The group was formed to provide an opportunity for the youth and adult sponsors to join together in promoting the ideals set forth by the Izaak Walton League. Uncle Ikes is open to all children and grandchildren, ages 7 to 14, of active Izaak Walton League members. Uncle Ikes meet on the 4th Tuesday of every month, except December, January and February. The meetings are held at the Des Moines Club House, beginning at 6:30 pm, with a special meal provided by the Ikes for the kids. Some months there will be activities on weekends or other nights, which might take the place of the regular scheduled Tuesday night meeting.
Past projects completed by the Uncle Ikes have been the building of bat houses, blue bird houses, wood duck nesting houses, bird feeders, squirrel feeders, butterfly houses and flag poles. Some of the on going activities include stream clean up and monitoring, at Yeader Creek with the SOS committee, establishing a blue bird trail, fishing line recycling stations, a pumpkin outing including a hayrack ride, maize and campfire. They usually have a pizza party in November and a fall campout.
Future activities may include monarch butterfly count, atrchery, BB gun shooting, making fishing lures and additional wood projects.
Please consider enrolling your son, daughter, grandson or granddaughter in this fun group and thereby, giving them an early exposure to the doctrines of the Izaak Walton league.
Thank you, Dave McCartney, Uncle Ikes leader.
